ELDERY CARE

Can architecture increase the quality of life for elderly people with dementia?

This is a project about dignity, delight and what it means to feel at home.

”Any work of architecture that does not express serenity is a mistake”

Luis Barragán

Simplicity in form reduces anxiety while a wide variety of familiar, homelike components helps to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

A space to dwell in with all five senses. The sound of birdsong is elicited when enough trees are planted. The aroma of freshly baked pastries wafts from the cafe. Natural materials are soft to the touch and gain a beautiful patina over time. The taste of home-cooked food and views towards a flourishing meadow garden.

The perennial garden is the crown jewel of the project. Evidence-based research on Biophilia shows that a beautiful garden strengthens mental and physical well-being. Residents and staff can use the garden for stress-relieving walks, boules, work out, barbecues, coffee breaks and horticulture. Or just enjoy the changing nature of the seasons.

Much quality of life can be created with relatively simple means.
